People from around the world came together at the July 6 Global Summit Dialogue: , to bring attention to the critical role international trade plays in food security and its impact on climate change. The Dialogue allowed for participants to discuss how the multilateral trading system can best contribute to the food system.
International trade in food feeds one in every six people around the globe. Climate change will render international trade even more central to food security, reinforcing its role in the movement of food from food surplus to food-deficit nations in the wake of natural calamities.
Conservative estimates show that one out of every six people around the world depends almost entirely on international trade to get the food they eat. About thirty countries rely on imports for nearly all their food, and when you listen to some of these countries talk, you realize how important trade is to ensure that people in the planet are fed.” - Director General of the World Trade Organization, Dr. Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala
