On 30 January 2023, the exhibition “After the Holocaust: Displaced Persons and Displaced Persons Camps” opened at the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum in Shanghai, China.
The exhibition, curated by the Holocaust and the United Nations Outreach Programme, presented an overview of the work of the United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Administration (UNRRA) and the life of Holocaust survivors in displaced persons camps in the aftermath of catastrophic loss. Special panels were jointly developed by the United Nations and the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum for this exhibition, focusing on the life of Jewish refugees in Shanghai and the relief work of UNRRA.
The opening ceremony of the exhibition was co-organized by the Museum in partnership with the Consulate General of Israel in Shanghai, in observance of the International Day of Commemoration in memory of the victims of the Holocaust.
The ceremony began with opening remarks by Jian Chen, Director of the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum. Mr. Chen highlighted the close involvement of Shanghai in rescuing and aiding Jewish Refugees after the Second World War, showcasing the city’s connection to the world and pursuit for common values of humankind.
A video message from United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres in observance of the International Day, followed by statements by the Consul Generals of Israel, United States, Germany, United Kingdom, France and Italy in Shanghai. The Consul Generals then lit candles in memory of the six million victims murdered during the Holocaust.
"The stories and history in this exhibition illuminate hope, dignity, humanity and the common values we share as a global society to help people in need," commented Vanno Noupech, the Representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) in China.
The exhibition is open to the public from 30 January to 9 April 2023 at the Shanghai Jewish Refugees Museum in Shanghai, located at 62, Changyang Road, Hongkou District.
