Regional judicial colloquia for judges and magistrates on the application of international human rights law, in particular the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination against Women, at the domestic level

Santiago, Chile, 25 - 27 May 2005

	Dame Sylvia Cartwright, Governor-General of New Zealand addressing the participants Summary of her address Dame Sylvia Cartwright, Governor General of New Zealand and former member of the Committee on the Elimination of Discrimination against Women, honoured the colloquium with a brief informal meeting with the participants while on official visit in Chile. Dame Sylvia reflected on her experience as former CEDAW expert and high court judge and on the role of judges in promoting women's enjoyment of their human rights, including their protection from violence and availability of effective means of redress. While application of human rights norms, particularly in relation to women in domestic courts may pose challenges, Dame Sylvia encouraged participants to find ways to overcome those. Interaction with associations of women lawyers, strengthening of networks among lawyers, and reflection of human rigths norms and standards in Court decisions were some of the ways in which this could be done. In the ensuing dialogue, participants raised the use of conciliation in cases of violence against women and its adverse implications for victims.
