Global Stocktaking on Sustainable Energy Concludes with Call to Action by Assembly President

Delegates representing governments, the 邋控輦華system, and NGO and youth organizations convened in the 邋控輦華General Assembly Hall on 19 April to give their perspectives on how to accelerate action and scale up partnerships and financing to achieve affordable, clean energy for all (SDG7), as part of a Global Stocktaking marking the completion of the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Energy for All (2014-2024). The stocktaking was mandated by the 邋控輦華General Assembly and convened by the Assembly President as part of the first-ever Sustainability Week held by the GA.

The Assembly President, Mr. Dennis Francis, issued a Call to Action on sustainable energy at the conclusion of the event. Recognizing the immense strides made in securing sustainable energy for all yet the persistent gaps that remain, the President urged action to extend access to electricity for over 600 million people and provide clean cooking solutions to over 2 billion people. He also called for action to rapidly accelerate transitions to clean, renewable energy in a just, orderly and equitable manner, through tripling renewable energy capacity globally and doubling the global average annual rate of energy efficiency improvements by 2030.

In addition, he urged a dramatic scaling up of finance and investment for developing countries, especially by tripling global investment in renewable energy and energy efficiency towards 2030, with particular attention to the most vulnerable countries. and by boosting public-private partnerships, especially for technology transfer for least developed countries.

He added, ※I urgently call on Member States and other stakeholders, encompassing the 邋控輦華system, civil society, private sector, women, youth, academia, among others, to follow up on the United Nations Decade of Sustainable Energy for All, as well as to sustain and strengthen international dialogue and cooperation on energy at the UN, including through a potential 邋控輦華conference on energy.§
