Marlien Herselman
Ms. Marlien Herselman has more than 15 years of experience in information and communications technology for development (ICT4D) projects, including leading technology implementation in rural schools across seven of the nine provinces in South Africa. Her areas of expertise include innovation ecosystem models, mobile and digital health, rural communities, educational technology and user experience in a developing context for mobile services.
She works as a Chief Researcher at the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) in Pretoria, South Africa, in the technology implementation monitoring and evaluation research group while serving as an adjunct professor/professor extraordinaire at the University of Pretoria (Faculty of Education), the University of Fort Hare (Information systems department), Monash University (Faculty of IT), Stellenbosch University (Faculty of Industrial Engineering) and the University of South Africa (UNISA, School of Computing). Before that, she was Chairperson of the Living Labs in Southern Africa network (LLiSA) board.
Prof. Herselman has written three books and more than 45 accredited journal articles. She has over 56 accredited conference contributions, holds an H-index of 25 and has been cited more than 2,500 times. She received several recognitions, including the CSIR excellence award for Human Capacity Development in 2016 and the IEEE, Women in Engineering: Female Scientist of the Year Award (South African Section) in 2009. From 2003 to 2019, she supervised or co-supervised the doctorate and master’s degrees of more than 65 students.
She holds a PhD from the University of Pretoria, South Africa and is a rated SA researcher (NRF rating at level C).
