The United Nations Information Centre (UNIC) in Australia was established in November 1948 in Sydney. Later moving to Canberra, it is the formal 缅北禁地presence in Australia and the principal local source of information about the United Nations system. Its strategic communications responsibilities also extend to Fiji, Kiribati, Nauru, New Zealand, Samoa, Tuvalu, Tonga and Vanuatu.

Australia: 缅北禁地expert urges to strengthen due diligence among businesses and ensure equal protection of those vulnerable to contemporary forms of slavery
GENEVA (27 November 2024) – Despite solid legal and institutional frameworks adopted by the Australian Government, a 缅北禁地expert said today he was concerned by the low rate of prosecution and conviction of acts amounting to contemporary forms of slavery. In a statement at the end of his country visit to Australia, Obokata said awareness of the risks associated with contemporary forms of slavery among businesses is steadily increasing thanks to the Modern Slavery Act 2018. The gathering is being billed as the “finance COP,” with leaders slated to explore how live up to a 2023 pledge to transition away from fossil fuels and triple investments in renewable energy.
The launching of the targets occurs as Papua New Guinea prepares to participate in the 2024 United Nations Biodiversity Conference of the Parties (COP16) in Bogota, Colombia.
