Assessments

The expenses of the Organization shall be borne by the Members as apportioned by the General Assembly.
(Article 17, paragraph 2, of the Charter of the United Nations)

Assessment is the term used for the amount of money that the General Assembly determines should be assessed to finance the approved appropriation, which is shared among Member States to pay for the expenses of the Organization. Assessments are made to Member States for the following:

There are also procedures for assessing non-member States.

Regular budget

By its resolution of 24 December 2021, the General Assembly adopted the scale of assessments for the contributions of Member States to the regular budget of the United Nations for 2022, 2023 and 2024. 

Peacekeeping operations

By its resolution ,  the General Assembly decided that from July 2001,

 “the rates of assessment for peacekeeping operations should be based on the scale of assessments for the regular budget of the United Nations, with an appropriate and transparent system of adjustments based on levels of Member States”. 

The composition of levels of contribution for peacekeeping operations was changed for the period 2022 to 2024 as contained in the addendum to the report of the Secretary-General (, annex), and adopted by the Assembly in its resolution of 24 December 2021.
