The United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) is pleased to announce the Sixth Annual J. Michael Adams Lecture and Conversation, to be held on Wednesday, 20 November 2019 from 3:00 to 4:30 p.m. at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
The lecture, entitled I was 20 in 1945, will be delivered this year by international human rights pioneer Peter Weiss. A highly recognized and innovative human rights lawyer , Peter Weiss was the Vice President of the Center for Constitutional Rights (CCR), through which he has pioneered human rights law both nationally and internationally for over forty years. Mr. Weiss fled Nazi occupied Austria in 1938 and settled in the US in 1941. He has sought to tackle various human rights issues of his lifetime. After his Army service from 1944-1946, he served as a staff member of the decartelization branch of the U.S. military government in Berlin. Later graduating from Yale Law School, Mr. Weiss took the lead in representing national and international groups of lawyers calling for the abolition of nuclear weapons as President of the Lawyers Committee on Nuclear Policy and President of IALANA (International Association of Lawyers Against Nuclear Arms) in the years leading up to the International Court of Justice's 1996 opinion that the use of nuclear weapons violates international law. As President of the American Committee on Africa, Peter Weiss was actively involved in the global support to the ending of Apartheid and colonialism in Africa.
The UNAI J. Michael Adams Lecture and Conversation Series was inaugurated in 2014 in remembrance of educator, author and advocate of global citizenship J. Michael Adams. Dr. Adams served as President of Fairleigh Dickinson University from 1999 until his death in 2012, during which time he inspired a new vision and mission dedicated to preparing world citizens through global education. At the time of his passing, he was also President of the International Association of University Presidents.
