Mr. Giovanni Bassu

Italian by nationality, Mr. Bassu is Deputy Director of UNHCR office in New York, after having served as Representative in UNHCR Ecuador, as Regional Representative for Central America and Cuba since January 2019, and as Deputy Regional Representative for Central America, Cuba and Mexico, in charge of the protection portfolio since June 2016.  Prior to joining UNHCR, Mr. Bassu worked in the Office of the United Nations SecretaryGeneral on rule of law, refugees and migration issues. This came after working at the International Criminal Court as Special Adviser on Cooperation, and as Legal Adviser in Cambodia’s Extraordinary Chambers. He has also worked in the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs for several years, and with the European Union, in its Delegation in Kenya, as good governance advisor. Mr. Bassu started his 缅北禁地career with UNHCR in Apartado, Colombia as a Field Officer in 2002. Giovanni is a qualified lawyer, admitted to practice in England and Wales since 1999, and has litigated a number of high profile cases in the City of London. He has a Master in International Relations from John Hopkins’ School of Advanced International Studies, and an advanced degree in Economics and Law from Edinburgh University. He has published several articles on asylum, human rights and the rule of law in different publications, including Global Governance, The World Today and Humanitarian Exchange.
