Ms. Monicah Malith

Monicah Malith is a Nomadic Pastoralist family in the newly founded republic of South Sudan. She left her motherland and the cattle camp she had known as "my home" in July 2008 for Kenya. This was at the height of political tensions and tribal skirmishes that pushed hundreds of thousands to flee for safety, many not sure of their destination! She started schooling in 2009 although she could hardly communicate in either English or Kiswahili. Nonetheless, with the interest she had in education and the amazing support she got from her teachers and classmates; things turned around so fast. In two years’ time, she was able to catch up and she managed to take standard 3 and 4 studies with a lot of ease. Her teachers discovered she was greatly gifted academically and well-endowed with leadership skills. She sat for her KCPE in the year 2015 and excelled, to the delight of the many who had believed in and supported her.

She joined high school in 2016 and completed her A level studies in 2019 at Anestar Precious Girls High School. While there, she was the Deputy Head Girl in form two and became the School Head Girl in form 3-4. As a young refugee girl, she has faced many challenges in her education journey, but with determination, resilience, and hard work, she has overcome these personal difficulties. There have been devastating hardships – including the loss of her father during high school exams, the constant struggles to pay school fees, and the continual pressure to consent to forced marriages – as well as hope, and opportunities. She believes sharing her experiences can empower other refugee girls who face challenges and setbacks like her, and who can discover that education is the key to transforming your life, breaking free from societal constraints, and charting your own path.?
