Handong Global University, along with the Mission of the Republic of Korea to ASEAN and Sookmyung Women’s University, signed a new memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish networks between universities and ministries in ASEAN countries to further the capacity building of sustainable development.

On 17 October 2019, President Dr. Soon-Heung Chang of Handong Global University, Ambassador H.E. Sung-Nam Lim of the Mission of the Republic of Korea to ASEAN, and President Dr. Jung-ae Kang of Sookmyung Women’s University attended the MOU Signing Ceremony in Seoul, Korea. The ceremony opened opportunities for development in higher education in ASEAN countries, laying the foundation for the ASEAN-Republic of Korea Commemorative Summit to take place on 25-27 November 2019 in Busan, Korea.

During ceremony, the three institutions committed to the following actions: launch joint research projects with ASEAN universities and institutions; open Start-Up Business Centers and education programmes; host ASEAN entrepreneurship and start-up programmes; collaborate through the operation of Joint Education Programmes to promote start-ups in ASEAN countries. The institutions decided to establish an ASEAN Start-Up Education Committee to ensure the effective implementation of the programmes.

We hope that Handong Global University will have successful partnerships with the Mission of the Republic of Korea to ASEAN and Sookmyung Women’s University to foster the growth of future problem-solving leaders through higher education in ASEAN countries, said President Chang of Handong Global University.

H.E. Ambassador Lim of the Mission of the Republic of Korea to ASEAN expressed the ASEAN Secretariat’s willingness to analyze the demands for Higher Educations in its member countries and cooperate with the two institutions to actively promote the reinforcement of connectivity.

Sookmyung Women’s University will do our very best to cultivate problem-solving capacities of the 4th Industrial Revolution, added President Kang of Sookmyung Women’s University. The University is also committed to preparing future ASEAN women leaders who are equipped with a trust-worthy character.

Along with the cooperation agreement, Handong Global University and Sookmyung Women’s University presented the results of programmes successfully held in ASEAN countries over the past years, with future plans to promote and further the cooperation with ASEAN countries as host universities of the UNESCO University Twinning and Networking (UNITWIN) programme.

Having hosted education programmes and workshops in Cambodia, Myanmar, Vietnam, Thailand and Laos, Handong Global University is planning to extend its entrepreneurship education and higher education capacity-building programmes to Malaysia, Indonesia and the Philippines in 2020.
