Building upon the UNESCO theme of Science for Peace and Development, the goal is to create new ways for institutions to proactively address global sustainability while reaching increasingly diverse audiences. Activities at locations across different time zones will all focus on the UN's 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which seek to end poverty, fight inequalities, and tackle climate change, while ensuring that no one is left behind.

World Science Day for Peace and Development is an annual event to renew national and international commitment to science for peace and development and to stress the responsible use of science for the benefit of society. The WSDPD also aims to raise public awareness of the importance of science and to bridge the gap between science and societies.

Science is critical to meeting the world's challenges, said ASTC's Anthony Rock. Science is universally relevant across borders and cultures, and science literacy is key to public engagement and action. Everyone must play a part to meet the challenges addressed by the SDGs. ?ASTC members and staff alike are doing everything possible to raise awareness and help us all to be participants in the solutions achievable to meet these goals for our planet.
