The Millennium Campus Network (MCN) and the United Nations Academic Impact (UNAI) are proud to present the Class of 2019, an ambitious program to help make the Sustainable Development Goals and UNAI principles a reality.
Millennium Fellows are university undergraduates selected based on their leadership on sustainable development-related projects that advance the SDGs in their communities.? As Millennium Fellows, they will participate in a semester-long leadership development program to improve their student organizing, partnership building and community impact skills.? There was a record 7,020 applications for the program this year from young leaders on 1,209 campuses across 135 nations.
The Millennium Fellowship Class of 2019 includes 1,092 Fellows from 69 campuses in 16 nations that are participating in the program this year. The Class of 2019 is on track to include projects covering all 17 Sustainable Development Goals and all 10 UNAI Principles. This year's class is set to positively impact the lives of over 978,400 people across the globe. Here is just a snippet of the fantastic projects the Class of 2019 has taken on:
At Indian Institute of Technology Madras in Chennai, India, Millennium Fellows are advancing SDG 4 - quality education - by repurposing wasted paper to produce eco-friendly notebooks to be distributed to students who cannot afford it across public schools in Chennai.?Fellows are projected to impact 2,000 students over the next four months.
At Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology in Kumasi, Ghana, Millennium Fellows are advancing SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy - by producing charcoal made from agricultural waste to substitute for the traditional method for charcoal production positively impacting over 1,000 community members in 9 communities in Ghana.
At Harvard University?in Cambridge, MA, USA, a Millennium Fellow is advancing SDG 10: Reducing inequalities - by reconstructing the narrative around social networks through a social network application that aims to de-stigmatize mental health, combat inequities faced by marginalized groups, and promote free, accessible peer support. The application has reached 32,000 users and is projected to impact over 10,000 people during the Millennium Fellowship.
