WIPO 2018 IP Services: Innovators File Record Number of International Patent Applications, With Asia Now Leading

Asia-based innovators filed more than half of all international patent applications via WIPO for the first time in 2018 on significant growth from China, India and the Republic of Korea, capping another record-setting year forÌý.

°Â±õ±Ê°¿'²õÌýÌý(PCT) passed a record-breaking quarter-million (253,000) filing mark in 2018, a 3.9% increase over 2017, while °Â±õ±Ê°¿'²õÌýÌýsaw 61,200 international trademark applications, a 6.4% increase. °Â±õ±Ê°¿'²õÌýÌýfor industrial designs saw 3.7% growth in 2018, reaching 5,404 applications.

Youth and Carbon Pricing: A Unifying Solution to Climate Change

On March 15, 2019 youth across the globe went on strike for their futures. They were responding to warnings from scientists that global warming is a serious threat to the health of the planet.

In the United States, young people have been advocating for climate action before school strikes and the Green New Deal put them in the headlines.ÌýA solution they've been supporting is carbon pricing—a policy mechanism that puts a price on carbon pollution and in some cases returns revenue to households.ÌýThe Energy Innovation and Carbon Dividend Act (H.R 763) introduced in January of 2019 is the fruit of that effort, legislation that if passed experts estimate would reduce U.S. emissions 40 percent in 12 years while providing income to households.
